The Voice POP: Making of Polje Video

UNIKLUBI WAS FOUNDED IN 1999 IN TAMPERE
„SYVÄÄN VALOON“ IS UNIKLUBI’S FOURTH RECORD
THE BAND HAS ALSO RELEASED THE COMPILATION KMMA 03-08

[in the courtyard]
Jussi Mäntysaari: Freezing temperatures out here at the area of Suvlahden Voimala! [note: a former power plant located in Helsinki] UK’s Teemu and Pasi are here shooting a video. We can see Linnanmäki from here and te conditions just go into those little shacks in the background. What’s the main idea of the video?
Pasi: It’s a performance-video, so we haven’t really concieved a main plot.

ON THE DAY OF THE SHOOTING IT WAS -18°C COLD, INSIDE CA. -10.

Teemu: Now that we have those freezing-conditions we should have some chicks in damn short clothes. It’s all but revenge.
Jussi M.: Making the chicks suffer?
Teemu: Yep. Well, it’s a a basic performance-video, and we have all those fluorescent lamps that from my point of view look damn good.

IN SUMMER THE FLOW-FESTIVAL FOR ELECTRIC MUSIC IS ORGANISED IN THE LOCATION

Jussi M.: OK. It was already mentioned that morning that usually during video-shoots it’s very hot because the lamps are so hot in the studio and it takes so long to get everything done and so on. Now it’s a bit like the conditions never fit to the plot of the video and there’s always a lot of suffering involved to get it done.
Teemu: It can never be the right conditions.
Pasi: But actually the singer always has to endure the real suffering, be it in the swamp-water or hanging from some strings, always being vexed. But it can never be good.
[Pasi refers to the videos for Huomenna and Rakkaudesta Hulluuteen]
Jussi M.: Wasn’t it in the video for Huomenna that Jussi was in the water?
Pasi&Teemu: Yeah

[inside, Jussi in front of … something]
Jussi: Haa… [knocks] haalloo… don’t you wanna play a litte? – It doesn’t listen. [laughs]

[in the courtyard again]
AT THE END OF THE YEAR 2009 UNIKLUBI TOURED TOGETHER WITH KLAMYDIA ON THEIR PASKANTA PIIKKILANKAA-TOUR

Jussi M.: What else is going on? At the end of last year you were on tour with Klamydia at the same time as you were preparing your record. How did it work out for you?
Teemu: Yeah now we probably already had some demos for over a year… over a year and we had started working on them… then, little by little, we started in the Studio in Dece-… [to Pasi] – When did we go into the studio? I don’t remember.
Pasi: I don’t remember either. When did we go to Petrax…
Teemu: It was probably in November.
Pasi: …And then we continued in Tampere…
Teemu: Yes, first it was done in Hollola and then we continued in Tampere, little by little and now we start doing the vocal parts since we haven’t done much for them so far.

[on set]
Antti: It went well.

ALEKSI KOSKINEN HAS ALSO DIRECTED THE BAND’S VIDEOS FOR VNUS AND RAKKAUTTA JA PIIKKILANKAA.

[somewhere inside]
Jussi M.: Now we have Uniklubi’s Jussi around. You’re about in the middle of your shooting for the video for Polje and [no idea]. But tell us a little about the atmosphere here in this hall.
Jussi: Fucking cold but intense views and we’re about to shoot a rock-video.
Jussi M.: The atmosphere is rock.
Jussi: Yeah, the atmosphere is rock. Fucking cold, there’s nothing else to be said about that really.

Jussi M.: What is the song Polje about?
Jussi: There’s some sort of shizophrenic feeling in any case. Weeee-ll I don’t know, it’s a bit stupid to say myself what the song is about. Like being wasted in some little bar. [note: I don’t know what he wants to say next. Probably, that it doesn’t talk about a single person in particular] – Something like that.

Jussi M.: You probably have to do lots of interviews now before the record comes out. You don’t talk so much about lyrics and these kind of metaphores…? [note: absolutely not sure about this one]
Jussi: Yeeees, or, let’s say, in a certain way I do, in another I don’t. There are those kinds of songs which are a bit more straight forward talking about what’s going on, like, they rather talk about that guy in his 24’s getting into the dangerous situations where promises are broken… but yeah that’s the feeling. [??]

[On set, shooting]
Teemu: Greedy-looking lights. Aiijaii… [??]
Tech: Everybody ready? And go… camera!

[Off set]
Jussi M.: During the tour with Klamydia last year you got sick and had problems with your voice so that you had to undergo a talking- and singing-prohibition. Did you say that happen right in the middle of the tour?
Jussi: Yeess… I had a polype in my throat so I was banned from talking and then after that voice therapy and these kind of „voice – mending“ things. Now it begins to be „all riight“ [note: he says that in English] again, but it’s fucked up that we had to cancel the little acoustic tour because of that – which is by the way going to be postponed to later. It’s really bad but crying about it is in vain – but for now everything’s in a good condition.

BEFORE UNIKLBUI, JUSSI AND PASI HAD A BAND CALLED PINCENEZ

Jussi M.: Isn’t it scary as a vocalist to come to a point at which you suddenly cannot sing anymore? What if the voice doesn’t come back at all?
Jussi: Sure it’s scary but luckily we’re on the winning road and the voice-rehabilitation is succeeding and has succeeded. Apart from that I have stopped smoking and been non-smoking for two months now. I had to change some ways of live and stuff so that now everything is better…

THE DOCTOR PROHIBITED, APART FROM SMOKING, ALSO THE CONSUMPTION OF STRONG ALCOHOL

[In a short sequence, Pasi and Teemu are talking on set, but I don’t understand either of them.]

Jussi M.: So you stopped smoking for your voice and also changed several other things. Do the problems come back more easily when you smoke a lot and torment your voice?
Jussi: Yes, but really everything influences that, stress, smoking, not taking care of the voice and …
Jussi M.: It sounds like quite a Rockstar-illness.

[On set, the guys are directed]

[Off set again]
Jussi M.: I guess it’s the time to continue with your shooting now. Try to stay a little in the warmth so that you can finish the record and get the video done without further damage.
Jussi: And get the album sold.
[They’re talking/laughing a bit more about that, but I can’t follow them]

Jussi M.: Thanks, Jussi.
Jussi: Thank you.
